Other attractions to consider in your free time in close proximity of the crusades:
Shemula Lodge:
Come and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the Maputaland bush. Shemula Lodge is centrally situated from Ndumo Game Reserve (17kms) internationally renown for its birding. Tembe Elephant Park (15kms) home to the last of the free ranging Elephants, Kosi Bay (70kms), and God’s own aquarium. Sodwana Bay (90kms), the mecca of scuba diving and Ponta D’Ouro border post (72kms), your gateway to Mozambique. The Pongola River Floodplains are 5 mins from Shemula Lodge and provide excellent canoeing opportunities and tiger fishing.
Kosi Bay Lodge:
In the far North Eastern corner of KwaZulu-Natal lies one of natures last frontiers – Kosi Bay part of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park – the first natural World Heritage Site in South Africa to be accorded this distinction. Unique in its people, resources, ecology, culture Kosi Bay epitomises the incredible splendour of untouched Africa at its most pristine.
Kosi Bay often described as the last outpost of untouched African paradise, pristine beauty as God had originally created. Age old traditions passed down by generations of tribal existence still continue to this day in untainted originality. Ancient fishing kraals erected and tendered by the resourceful Tonga people provide sustainable catches that do not deplete the fish population. Kosi Bay was described by one of the first scientists to explore this region as “A wonderful aquarium and the most gorgeous aviary”. Kosi Bay’s pristine wealth of beauty and natural resources has to be seen with the physical eye to be fully appreciated.
Snorkeling in the channel at the mouth of the estuary, with its kaleidoscope of tropical fish is a wonderful way of getting through another day in paradise. Over 200 species of tropical fish have been identified here. Surf angling from unspoiled beaches, boat fishing on the lakes, or silent rhythmic fly-fishing from the rocks and banks. Lake Makhawulani’s tidal ebb and flow brings fish into the estuary on every high tide. Kosi Bay is a system of 4 lakes ranging from freshwater to saline that feed into the ocean.
Forest of raffia palm, Raphia australis. Kosi Bay is the only location in South Africa where this species occurs naturally. Its leaves, up to 18m long, are the largest in the plant kingdom.
Turtle tracking is also is also one of the favorite attractions at Kosi Bay.
Juzini:
Jozini, a small town in North Eastern KwaZulu Natal on the main route to Mozambique, is synonymous with the dam of the same name - the Jozini or Pongolapoort Dam. This huge dam, on the Pongola River, provides a rather dramatic doorway into Maputaland and the river supports a massive population of fish, hippos and crocodiles as well as the people who live in the area.
The Jozini Dam lies in between the majestic Ubombo and Lebombo mountains on the Elephant Coast and covers over 16 000 ha. It was originally designed to irrigate over 80 000 ha of farm land supporting products such as sugarcane, rice, coffee and various sub-tropical fruits. Many have compared it to Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe and it is fast becoming the mecca of many wild game seekers as farmers convert vast tracts of land around the dam back to their virgin bush in the bid to realise a dream to return this area to its former wild life kingdom.
Lake Jozini, as the dam is now called, has become very popular as a Tiger fishing destination and because the dam borders with the Pongola Nature Reserve and Game Reserve, you can view wildlife from your boat and glow-flies light up the early evening shoreline, transforming the water into an incandescent array of fairy lights.
The main attraction in this area is the return of the elephant. But there are vast numbers of other game to be viewed, including: buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, kudu, bushbuck, duiker, steenbok, hyena, cheetah, wild dog, cerval cat, warthog and even the occasional sighting of leopard, which roam the Lebombo mountains.
The dam’s muddy plains and reed banks are home to a vast array of birdlife, over 350 different species, including the whistling duck, yellow billed storks, Egyptian geese, herons, kingfishers and several fish eagles.
